M Ram, of The Right Selection Bookshop, believes it’s a blessing to do a job that one enjoys. And few things are closer to his heart than books.

“I think, perhaps the reason for my starting a bookshop goes back to my childhood passion for non-fiction books. Books really inspired to become a distributor 10 years ago. I was at the crossroads of my life and I wanted to do something other than just dealing in the everyday commodities. I needed something that would make life more meaningful something I should identify with.”

“Of course, the financial implications were important, but not the main criterion for choosing books (distribution). It was my passion for reading that spurred me to see what the potential for books was in the UAE. I was surprised to find that books I loved as a child and young man were still popular and in demand, titles like How to win people and influence people, for example.”

“I felt a positive emotion when I realized that these books were still popular and I decided to focus on personal development range which has since lead to audio and video titles as well.”

“I love what I do, and I believe it’s a blessing to find a career that you enjoy. It keeps my energy level high and overrides the stress of everyday life. Being in the right line definitely comes from the heart. After all, we spend over half our lives at work.”

“I think that perhaps the most memorable and joyful moment was when my son graduated in business and finance and decided to join the business. He instantly fell in love with it and I am happy that he has decided to take this road. For me, it’s the chance to introduce young blood and energy to expand the business and take things further. As a result, we have started going into event management and business seminars, and my son is great with long term planning.”

“Apart from my love for books, what has really kept me going is the interaction I enjoy with my clients. It’s a great thrill to watch a relationship going from strength to strength and I get pleasure and a boost when clients approach me for help and advice.”
